WHY I RUN - JASON WILLIAMSON

Friend of the brand Jason Williamson is one half of the cult post-punk duo Sleaford Mods. We caught up with Jason between studio sessions to talk running, and the intense life it helps sustain. Read the conversation below.

“To Live a Complicated Life Where Possible.”

What have you been up to recently?

"Doing the new album. Headfuck. That’s not the title btw…."

We know you run. How long have you been ‘running’ for?

"Around 25 years. I’ve never hit big mileage just 25-30 minutes at a good speed. Twice a week depending. I mix it in with weights & boxing."

What's the main reason for your running?

"To live a complicated life where possible. I think that’s what exercise means to me. I’ve put myself through hellish lifestyle’s due to problems I’ve now largely got a hold on. So it’s important to try and give back to my body now."

Do you check your own stats or do you rawdog it?

"Yea I’m not big on stat’s. I can tell when I need to lose a few pounds or when I’m over exercising."

How often will you run and do you run on tour?

"Weekly if I can. Yes I do run on tour but it’s also important to not do regular exercise on tour in the sense of my usual effort. 90 minutes cardio which is what a gig is essentially, five nights a week, is more than enough. But I love weights so I go to the gym in the day if I can."

Has running helped your music writing process?

"Yes. You can concentrate on ideas whilst running. Sounds weird but you can."

What gear do you like to wear when running?

"I wasn’t bothered before but now I like the Acid stuff mainly."

Are you a road or off-road runner or both? What do you prefer and why?

"I like the streets to be honest. But trails are good too."

What does the perfect run for you look like?

"25 minutes. 60% effort. Good sweat."

In terms of clothing, do you wear running gear away from actually running as well?

"Yea. Haha. On stage. All the time. The gorpcore thing helps I guess. But yea, providing I’ve got my flat stomach, I like wearing good shit. I’ll sweat pant up etc, if I’ve been yamming cakes. Haha.

"What does it have to look like to follow your style?

"Don’t! I’m an idiot. Haha."
