El Salvador - Coffee, Cocktails & Carbs
For the uninitiated, El Salvador conjures up the image of Nayib Bukele, the self-titled “coolest dictator in the world”, and the sight of thousands of gang members, packed into hyper-modern prisons.
But for the Acid runner, El Salvador, and specifically San Salvador, is a must-visit, and a key outpost in the Acid revolution.
The Store - Nova Running House
Founded earlier this year by local runner and Acid evangelist Oscar Melhado, Nova Running House is the first boutique running store in the country.
It has quickly become home to a community of Acid runners, whose shared love of running also crosses over into food, drink and even some impromptu DJ sets.
The Ceviche - Hermanos de Leche
I’m told Hermanos de Leche, which directly translates as “milk brothers” is less literally understood as “brothers from another mother”.
Thanks to their deep bond, these boys have got ceviche down to a fine art.
The vibey urban establishment offers delicious concept seafood and tostadas, all to be washed down with free pour cocktails.
The Smokehouse - El Holandés Errante
The first time I visited a Texan smokehouse, I made the mistake of drinking a Miller Lite, which made light work of my digestive system.
None of that low-quality nonsense at the so-called “BBQ embassy of El Salvador”, where craft beers whet the appetite for trayfuls of 14 hour smoked meats.
El Holandés is the sort of establishment you treat yourself to once, but end up returning to, three nights in a row.
The Restaurant - El Xolo
Now we’re going up a level.
El Xolo is the country’s most internationally recognised restaurant, set inside the National Museum of Anthropology.
So while you bore your partner on the difference between social constructivism and social constructionism, they can quietly enjoy macha ponzu, smoked pineapple desert and local cocktails.
The Bakery - Luma Panadería
Set in stylish Colonia San Benito, the experimental bakery-café Luma Panaderia is known for its homemade bread and brunch classics in a delightful courtyard setting.
Importantly for Acid runners, here you are the master of your own destiny. There is never a wrong time of day to order coffee, cocktails or more carbs.
